Some day La Galga will be naMed to the National Register of Historic Places

Some Ship's THAT ARE ALREADY THERE

Nebraska

Bertrand. The remains of this wooden stern-wheel steamboat lie in 15 feet of water at De Soto Bend in the Missouri River, near Blair, in the De Soto Wildlife Refuge. She was built in 1864 and sunk in 1865. Owned by the U.S. Government, Fish and Wildlife Service. Listed in the National Register as nationally significant.

This ship was found by treasure hunter's in 1968 on a federal wildlife refuge. It was then salvaged and a museum was built.

Florida

Legare Anchorage Shipwreck. This wooden British merchant vessel, named H.M.S. Fowey, wrecked in 1748. Her scattered remains are buried in Biscayne National Park. Owned by the U.S. Government, National Park Service. Listed in the National Register as part of an archeological district, this wreck is nationally significant. This shipwreck is a sovereign vessel of the United Kingdom but claimed by the United States. This is in direct contradiction to the actions of the federal government as regards to La Galga. See below for another inconsistency.

In the Florida keys there are two areas listed on the National register that contain the remains of the 1733 Spanish fleet. Captain Huony of La Galga sailed with this fleet and his ship, El Africa, was the only one to survive.

Virginia

H.M.S. Charon. The remains of this wooden Royal Navy fifth-rate warship lie in 15 feet of water in the York River off Gloucester Point. Built in 1778 and sunk in 1781, this vessel is entitled to sovereign immunity. Owned by the British Government. Listed in the National Register as part of an archeological district of regional significance. Does this mean that our government is less interested in H.M.S. Charon?

Massachusetts

In 1913, the coal schooner Paul Palmer burned and sank at the Stellwagen Bank off of Massachussets. It was discovered in 2000 and placed on the Register in 2007. Paul Palmer’s historical, architectural and archaeological significance contributed to its listing. In compliance with President Bush's Preserve America Executive Order, NOAA is increasing efforts to inventory, preserve, and protect historic resources in the agency's care, from shipwrecks to historic buildings.
